The 1.25 hour easy bus ride from Florence into Siena passes through vineyards and olive trees. Then it is up the hill to the Tuscan town of Siena. It is a town full of history and probably has the best piazza in all of Italy, Il Campo. The piazza itself is covered in brick. When the sun hits it, it becomes the perfect place to stretch out and enjoy this weather we are having.
The Duomo in Siena is one of the most impressive we have seen here in Italy. It's zebra-striped walls might reminds some of a psychedelic experience. Inside are works by Bernini, Michelangelo and other Renaissance masters. For me, it is the most interesting church that we visit. Nearby, the Panorama provides an unparalleled view of the Tuscan countryside.
We take some time for a cafe and gelato on Il Campo and head back into town.
Tonight we are doing something different instead of going out to a restaurant for dinner. We are going to an enoteca. An enoteca is a place where a glass of wine can be purchased and an all-you-can-eat buffet of GOOD Italian food is offered up. There are sandwiches, olives, cheeses, pastas, salamis, vegetables, salads, and the most delicious tomotoes you have ever eaten in your life. The other nice thing about an enoteca is that it is very social. We meet some locals, visitors from New Orleans, Berlin, and London and swap travel stories.
Of course, we finish up the night with a walk through the piazza and a couple of scoops of gelato. It's the end to a perfect day.

On our last small group tour of Italy, about half the group (4 of us) took a 2-day extension of the trip to Venice. It exceeed my expectations in that it is more romantic than I could have possibly imagined. Venice is one of those unique places on earth because it really is a city built into the sea.
