5 Things to Do in Iceland

5 Things to Do in Iceland

The Traveling Professor has done about 20 small group tours to Iceland and has discovered plenty of good things to do while there.  This is what The Professor recommends:

Reykjavik City Walk:  Reykjavik is the main city in Iceland with a population of about 120,000 people.  There is a surprisingly good "free" city walk of the city. It's a great introduction to Reykjavik.  You will see the Cathedral, Parliament, Harpa Concert Hall, historic sites, museums and good places to eat.

South Coast Tour:  The Professor recommends a private tour with our favorite guide, Gudrun Helga but there are large van tours available too.   It's a full-day and expect to see glaciers, volcanoes, black sand beaches, ancient caves and towering waterfalls.

Golden Circle:  Again, The Professor recommends a private tour.  Because it is closer to Reykjavik, this tour tends to be more crowded.  Usually the first stop is Thingvellir National Park where the Icelandic parliament was founded.  The tectonic plate separating Europe from North America is located here.  Don't miss the geyser and other gigantic waterfalls on this expedition.  A "must" lunch stop is Friðheimar for the best tomato soup and fresh bread to be found anywhere.

Blue Lagoon:  Located near the airport, this is a great stop on the way from the hotel to catch your flight.  Bathe outdoors in the hot thermal waters.  It's a truly Icelandic experience at the Blue Lagoon. Reservations are recommended.

Northern Lights: The aurora usually can be seen from late September into March.  Three elements are needed: darkness, clear skies, and the cooperation of Mother Nature.

And where do you stay while visiting Iceland?  The Traveling Professor always stays at the Holt Hotel on his small group tours to Iceland.  We love the location - so close to everything.  It's a unique hotel with the best private art collection in Reykjavik as well as a comfortable lounge with a fireplace. The staff will go out of their way to make sure you have a great stay.
