3 Scenic Train Trips in Scotland

3 Scenic Train Trips in Scotland

ScotRail is the national railway of Scotland.  It reaches into the far depths of Scotland, some of the most beautiful sites to be seen in Europe.  The Professor often includes these Scottish train trips on his small group tours to Scotland.

Mallaig to Fort William:  Running along this line is the famed "Jacobite Steam Train" that filled in for the Hogwart Express in the famous Harry Potter movie series.  Honestly, the Jacobite train experience is expensive, overcrowded and not very comfortable.  However, the regular service provided by the modern ScotRail trains is excellent.  It is more comfortable, cheaper and provides better view.  The highlight of this journey is traveling over the famous and grand Glenfinnan Aqueduct.

Fort William to Glasgow:  Known as the "West Highland Line" this takes travelers down from the Highlands.   It  travels through small outpost villages until it arrives in bustling Glasgow city.  Crossing rivers, waterfalls, bridges, with views of mountains and valleys, this may be the most scenic ride I have ever taken on a train.  On our last 3.5 hour ride we saw plenty birds of prey as well as a few stags roaming the fields.

Inverness to Kyle:  If you think Fort William to Glasgow is stunning, the Kyle Line gives it a good run for its money.  Starting in the Highlands capital of Inverness, travel for about 2.5 hours to the gateway to the Isle of Skye, Kyle of Lochalsh. If you're lucky, spot herds of deer along the way.  The wide array of lochs, mountains, small villages and forests along the route will make a fan of the Highlands out of anyone.
