4 Hidden Treasures of Paris

4 Hidden Treasures of Paris

Paris is a city of discovery.  On every tour to Paris, travelers will find something new, something else to enjoy.  The Traveling Professor reveals some of his favorite lesser-known sites in Paris.

The Cluny Museum (National Museum of the Middle Ages):  Constructed on the site of ancient Roman baths, the superstar here are the famous Lady and the Unicorn tapestries.  However, there is much more here.  See stained glass, up close from St. Chapelle.  There are golden crosses and artifacts from the Middle Ages.  It is a worthwhile step back in time.

Musée Jacquemart-André:  The Professor discovered this gem on a recent small group tour to Paris.  First of all, the tea room is perhaps the most elegant of all in Paris.  It is the best place for a wonderful French lunch experience at a price that won't hurt the pocketbook.  The mansion is the home of a wealthy family, impeccably decorated and furnished.  There are some wonderful works of art.  It is a step back in time to nineteenth century Paris.

Parc Monceau: Most travelers don't think of visiting a park on their first tour to Paris.  However, a visit here is worthwhile.  It is located in a more affluent and residential part of Paris, a bit away from tourist attractions.  It is unusual in that is is an English-style park and has a scaled down version of an Egyptian pyramid, a Chinese fort, a Dutch windmill, and Corinthian pillars.

Paris Canal Cruise:  Did you know that a Napoleon-era canal runs right through Paris? Not many people do.  It is a wonderfully enjoyable ramble through 7 locks along some of the loveliest neighborhoods in Paris.  It is called the Canauxrama cruise and is a great way to get off your feet for a few hours to experience something more relaxing than the tourist-crowded Seine River cruises.
