After breakfast on the veranda at our hotel in central Rome, half the group accompanied me on what I call a "Pilgrim's Walk" (well, we also took some busses) to some of the most important churches in Rome:

  • San Giovanni in Laterano and Santa Scala:  San Giovanni is the church of the Bishop of Rome (the Pope) and was where some of the newly elected Cardinals said mass.  Santa Scala are the Holy Stairs where pilgrims come to climb, on their knees, the stairs ascended and descended by Christ during his Passion on his way to trial.  These steps were bought to Italy by St. Helena in the 4th century.
  • St. Peter's in Chains:  This church was built upon the relic of the chains St. Peter was bound in when he was imprisoned in Jerusalem.  Michelangelo's massive statue of Moses also resides in the church.
  • Santa Maria Maggiore:  Is the resting place of the sculptor Bernini.  Some consider this church to be the most beautiful church in the city of Rome.  It contains relics of the True Cross and the Holy Crib.

The other half of our group took the short trek to the Borghese Gallery which holds some of the most famous and beautiful sculptures in the world.   Of particular interest are the works by Bernini.  The most ooh's and aah's were evoked by Bernini's Apollo and Daphne, considered one of the foremost works of Baroque sculpture.

After lunch, we boarded our high-speed luxury train for Florence.    The soothing 1.5 hour ride into the Tuscan hills was relaxing.   We checked into our centrally located Florence hotel and relaxed before taking a stroll through the compact historic district.   The contrast between Florence and Rome is striking.  Florence is a walking city with wide streets, piazzas and Renaissance architecture.   It was warm enough to have dinner "al fresco" tonight with dishes like sliced steak with rosemary potatoes, linguine with truffle sauce, lasagna, salads, linguine bolognese with truffle sauce, and some smooth Italian vino.  The only surprise was how reasonable (24 euros each) the bill was.

Hi Steve!
These reports bring back wonderful memories of my trip with you in September 2011. We too were 8 travelers who so enjoyed this beautiful country.

Enjoy the rest of the trip. It's over before you know it.

Regards,
Joanne

Can't believe I rode on a train going about 150 MPH. It was incredibly smooth.

Italy Video Blog: Romantic Venice
On our last small group tour of Italy, about half the group (4 of us) took a 2-day extension of the trip to Venice.   It exceeed my expectations in that it is more romantic than I could have possibly imagined.   Venice is one of those unique places on earth because it really is a city built into the sea.
