One of the nice things about traveling to Venice is that the train station is only a few hundred yards from the Grand Canal. When I got off the train and walked about a hundred yards or so, Venice exploded upon me. It was surreal to see buildings coming right out of the water. Vaporettos (water busses) were going back and forth the canal as were other smaller boats. It was a circus-like atmosphere that I had never expected.
We took a vaporetto over to St. Mark's Square where our hotel was located. It is a gorgeous ride down the Grand Canal under the Rialto Bridge. I was surprised how crowded and busy the canal was. Like you see in the videos and photos, the stone buildings sit right against the water. There are no cars on most of the island. The only way to get around is to walk or take a boat.
St. Mark's Square is one of the best in all of Italy. It is filled with tourists, pigeons, cafes, and music. The bell tower offers wonderful views. The architecture is a mix of East and West.
We stayed at the Hotel Flora, a small 3-star family owned hotel near St. Mark's. I liked the intimate feel. The sophisticated and breakfast room has an elegance about it that makes one feel as if you are back in the 1920's.
Surprisingly, the town empties out at night. The restaurants are more expensive than what I have experienced in the rest of Italy, but the food is some of the best I've had.

I agree, there are no pictures or movies that can prepare you for the experience of being there. There truly is no place like it in the world!

On our last small group tour of Italy, about half the group (4 of us) took a 2-day extension of the trip to Venice. It exceeed my expectations in that it is more romantic than I could have possibly imagined. Venice is one of those unique places on earth because it really is a city built into the sea.
