Lima is practically undiscovered by Americans. It is a modern, clean, sophisticated city. However, it is wisely held onto its charm of old Spanish colonialism in many ways. We are staying in a hotel on par with some of the best American hotels in one of the best neighborhoods of Lima, the Miraflores district. The weather is never disappointing and the people of Lima are friendly and sophisticated. The food is some of the best in the world and at bargain prices.
Our guide picked us up today and gave an expertly narrated tour of the Miraflores area. It is full of tastefully decorated homes. As we drive toward the historic district of Lima, it is clear that this country is progressing not only economically, but that have invested quite a bit in the arts and culture. There are museums of Italian art, textile and craft museums, museums of literature, historic churches, grand governmental palaces, and museums of culture. I particlulary liked the Church and Convent of San Francisco. It offered floral gardens, tiled walls and floors, and an open and airy example of historic Spanish architecture of Sout America. However, the highlight of our tour today was visiting the Larco Musuem, a privately owned museum of pre-Columbian art. It is done in a style and quality to rival some of the best museums of the world.

The common thread amongst our travelers is how impressed they are with Lima. I could tell some of them had low expectations. But after today, they are impressed.

On our last small group tour of Italy, about half the group (4 of us) took a 2-day extension of the trip to Venice. It exceeed my expectations in that it is more romantic than I could have possibly imagined. Venice is one of those unique places on earth because it really is a city built into the sea.
