Lake Titicaca is the highest navigable lake in the world. The days of steamships criss-crossing the lake are long gone. However, we are on a journey today that is just fascinating.
Our first stop are on the floating islands of Uros, where they the indigenous people claim to be inhabiting the earth before the sun appeared. These people actually do live on floating island of reeds where the hunt, fish, and trade to survive. While it is true that they do have some modern amenities like solar-powered small appliances, the life here is much the same as it was centuries ago. We are glady invited to experience their culture and way of life.
We then travel to Tauile, a mountainous island surrounded by deep blue water in the middle of the lake. You may have seen it featured in National Geographic Magazine a year or so ago. The people who live on this island, bare of roads, cars, and other amenities are friendly and unbelievably industrious. We see men and women alike, hauling 50 or 60 pounds of food, provisions, and other goods up the 600 foot stone path to the village on top of the island. The view from the square on top of the island is like nothing in the world: deep blue skies, white puffy clouds with a cool breeze.
We are invited into a home for a 100 percent organic, locally raised lunch of trout, vegetables, quinoa soup, and bread. Our hosts don't speak a word of English, but it does not matter. They are gracious and glad to have us visit. Our guide explains clearly to us about their way of life, dress, and culture.
On the boat ride back to Puno, we talk about our week in Peru and how diversified and unique it is. In a few short days we have all become good friends and have enjoyed a unique travel experience with memories that will last us for a long time to come.

On our last small group tour of Italy, about half the group (4 of us) took a 2-day extension of the trip to Venice. It exceeed my expectations in that it is more romantic than I could have possibly imagined. Venice is one of those unique places on earth because it really is a city built into the sea.
