No matter how you slice it, a visit to Vatican City is going to take up a big part of the day. Here are my top tips for visiting:
- Take the #40 or #64 bus to Vatican City
- Make sure the museum is open on the day of the planned visit (see: http://mv.vatican.va/3_EN/pages/z-Info/MV_Info_Orari.html )
- Wear appropriate clothing. No short shorts/skirts and no bare arms
- Don't go on a day where admission is free - the crowds will be overwhelming
- Before visiting Vatican City, tour Hadrian's Tomb (very close by) in the morning for the spectacular views
- If not doing a guided tour with an appointment, the later in the afternoon you go, the smaller the crowds will be. In the morning, the line can be hundreds of people long, in the late afternoon, you might be able to walk right in with no line at all
- If not doing a guided tour with an appointement (see http://mv.vatican.va/3_EN/pages/z-Info/MV_Info_Servizi_Visite.html ) do the audio tour.
- Photos are permitted in the museum, but not in the Sistine Chapel.
- The 2-3 hour tour ends at the Sistine Chapel. To go right into the basilica, exit towards the back, to your right. Normally, this exit is reserved for groups, so you may need to convince the ushers that this is how you want to exit.

On our last small group tour of Italy, about half the group (4 of us) took a 2-day extension of the trip to Venice. It exceeed my expectations in that it is more romantic than I could have possibly imagined. Venice is one of those unique places on earth because it really is a city built into the sea.
