Looking for a cheap place to stay in Paris? Here are the best picks by The Traveling Professor:
Hôtel de Nesle. This eclectic hotel in the 5th arrondissement near the Seine is for those looking for something out of the ordinary. Each generous sized room is different, themed in its own funky style with cool colors, bold furnishings, antique photos/posters, and painted-on wall murals. It also has its own garden. Days Inn it is not. The owners don’t seem to care if, or how many stars, if any, this hotel has. Book only by telephone. Rooms are 85-120 euros per night. 7, rue de Nesle. Hôtel Chopin. This is everything a Paris hotel should be. It is located amongst antique shops and quaint boutiques inside a pedestrian arcade in a lovely part of town. Good métro and bus transportation is close by. Owner Philippe Bidal’s Old World decorations of charm and grace makes this my favorite 2-star hotel. This is an excellent choice for a cheap place to stay in Paris. Bright, airy and surprisingly big rooms romantically gaze over the rooftops of Paris. 46, passage Jouffroy in the 9th arrondissement. Reasonable rates. Website: www.hotelchopin.fr.
Hôtel du College de France. The word “elegant” has probably never been used to describe this basic but clean, comfortable and quiet 2-star hotel in the Latin Quarter: Many travelers have given me positive reports regarding stays at the HDCDF and I can personally vouch for them. It is an excellent value and well-located. A great cheap hotel in Paris. 7, rue Thénard in the Latin quarter. Website: www.hotel-collegedefrance.com.
Grand Hôtel des Balcons. Please don’t let anyone else in on this 2-star secret. The hotel is a 19th century former townhouse in the trendy 6th arrondissement. The location is good, the rooms are comfortable, the staff is friendly, and the price is right. An easy walk from the RER B (direct from CDG airport), métro, and bus stops, near to restaurants and attractions. What else do you want? We often use this hotel on my small group tours to Paris. 3, rue Casimir Delavigne. Website: www.balcons.com.
Hôtel Saint Pierre. In the 6th arrondissement at 4, rue de l'École de Médecine. 2-star. Management recently spared all expense in renovating one of the best located hotels in the city. Designed for frugal travelers, it is clean, comfortable, and quiet. It is a Paris hotel that is cheap and in an excellent location. Give my regards to my friend Mhamed at the front desk when asking for room #5 when reserving. Website: www.saintpierre-hotel.com.
Hôtel Emile. 2 stars. A chic hotel with smallish rooms in the Marais close to the St. Paul métro. Rooms are a good value in the 135-175 euro range. 2, Rue Mahler, 4th arrondissement. Website: www.hotelemile.com.
New Orient Hôtel. A 2-star find with A/C near the St. Lazare train station. Everyone I have sent here has nothing but good things to say about it. The price is right with most rooms under €150 per night. 16, rue de Constantinople; 8th arrondissement. Website: www.hotel-paris-orient.com.
Hôtel St. Jacques. A 3-star hotel with a bit of charm located in the Latin Quarter close to the Panthéon. Although it was recently renovated, the rates are still attractive. It is one of the best "cheap hotels in Paris". The movie Charade with Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn was shot here. 35, rue des École. Website: www.paris-hotel-stjacques.com.
