What is ETIAS and Why do Travelers Need to Know About It?

What is ETIAS and Why do Travelers Need to Know About It?

Right now, in general, U.S. citizens do not need a visa to travel to Europe if they plan to stay less than 90 days.  There are some variations in that rule and they can be viewed here:  The 90-day rule will change at the end of 2022 and U.S. citizens traveling to Europe will need to have a visa for stays of less than 90 days.

This is where ther ETIAS visa comes in. ETIAS waives the visa requirement.    To get the visa waiver, US citizens need to have a passport (valid 3 months after the intended stay of each traveler), credit/debit card, email account, and then pay the ETIAS fee.  The amount of the fee is not yet known.

The ETIAS will be electronically linked to each passport but are required to carry a paper copy of the visa waiver.

More details will become available as we get closer to the end of 2022.  But with any new program, it might be better to proactively apply for the ETIAS visa program so there are no delays in future travel to Europe.
