Here are The Traveling Professor's tips for getting the best flights:

Non-Stop is Not Always the Cheapest Way to Go:   I looked at a price of a R/T non-stop between JFK and Paris CDG on American Airlines.   It found a price on AA of $1,175.  I then checked between Boston and CDG and the price was $875 on a flight that stopped over at JFK ON THE SAME FLIGHT I WAS QUOTED A PRICE OF $1,175.  Sounds crazy, right?  But for some strange reason, that sometimes how it works.

Sometimes Premium Economy is Cheaper than Coach:  This is rare, but when I find it, I usually find it on British Airways or Air France and if I find it at all, it is usually within 45 days of departure.   It all depends upon the time a ticket is purchased and seat availability.

You Have 24 Hours to Change Your Mind:  Regardless of what an airline says, you can change or cancel a ticket within 24 hours of purchasing it.

When is the Best Time to Buy Tickets:  Unless using award miles, get a ticket about 2-3 months ahead of a flight, although lately we have seen some good deals to Europe about a month ahead of time.

Use matrix.itasoftware.com to Search for Flights:  I have written extensively on using this website.  After doing the search, buy directly from the airline.
