Best Way to Transfer Between the Aiport and Hotel

Best Way to Transfer Between the Aiport and Hotel

In the majority of times traveling overseas, your hotel is not going to be located at the airport.  So, you are going to have to figure out how to get from the airport to your hotel.  On top of that every city has different ways to get from the airport to the hotel.  We find Iceland probably the most expensive and difficult way to get between hotel and airport and Bergen Norway as the easiest and cheapest.   We love Bergen's frequent and comfortable tram service that runs from the center of the city practically into the lobby of the airport

These are the most common options for travel between airport and hotel:

Taxi:  It's probably the most expensive option.  You would also think it is the most convenient option but in many cases it is not.  The Traveling Professor has had to wait on long taxi queues at airports in order to get to his hotel.  Therefore, in many cases taking a taxi is not the fastest way to get from the airport to the hotel.  At the hotel, some hotels may be able to schedule a taxi ride for you.  When using a taxi, always ask the driver for an estimate of how much it will cost to get to/from hotel and airport.

Public Shuttles:  Some hotels run shuttles between the airport to the hotel.  This is probably the least expensive option.  However, it can be a struggle with lots of luggage and it probably takes the most time.

Train Service:  Usually inexpensive, they are quick ways to get between airport and hotel.  However, if you have lots of luggage, this option can be cumbersome.  Then you need to figure out how to get from the destination train station to the hotel.

Favorite Rideshare Services like Uber/Lyft:  Sounds like a great idea, doesn't it?  However, Lyft does not exist in Europe and Uber has been banned or restricted in many cities and countries like Iceland, Germany and Denmark, so it might not be the best way to travel between airports and hotels.

Bus Shuttles:  Another inexpensive option but who wants to ride in a crowded bus with lots of luggage?  Then you need to figure out how to get to the hotel from the bus station.

Private Driver:  For The Traveling Professor, this is the best way to get between the hotel and airport.  Before departure, schedule a pickup at the airport to the hotel.  Sometimes when we have a longer transfer to the hotel, we might want to use a service like Daytrip.com.  For instance, if arriving in Rome and going to our hotel in Sorrento we book a private driver.  And if we want a 2-hour stop along the way at Pompeii for instance, they will accommodate us.   But if you just want to book a private driver between hotel and airport with no stops, The Professor recommends Welcome Pickups.   We like them because you can use them for just about any airport/hotel in any city.   They are easy to use and the price is right.
