Planning a Trip to Giverny the Home and Gardens of Claude Monet

Giverny is the home and gardens of the fames Impressionist, Claude Monet.  A visit to Giverny is easy to plan and do.  In this blog post, The Traveling Professor tells you how to plan a visit to Giverny from Paris.

Here are the essentials:

  • Opening Dates:  March 29-November 1, 2024.
  • Opening Times:  0930 to 6 pm.  Last admission at 530 pm
  • Cost:  13 euros for adults.  No discount for seniors.  Tickets may be booked in advance.

What exactly is Giverny?   It is the workshop, home and gardens of the famed Impressionist, Claude Monet.   He lived here for 43 years until his death in 1926.  The home has been preserved to appear as it did when Monet lived there.  The beautiful gardens include the famed pond where Monet drew inspiration for his famed Water Lilies paintings and many more of his extraordinary works.   On the grounds is a gift shop.  Across the street are shops and cafes.

How Much Time Should be Spent There?  If just visiting the house and gardens, 2 hours is good for most people.  There are other museums in the immediate area such as Museum of Impressionism Giverny that may add to time spent in Giverny.

How to Get There:

  • A drive to Giverny is about 1 hour from Paris.  There is parking directly across the street from the home.
  • Train:  It is a 45-minute train ride from Gare St Lazare train station in Paris at a cost of about 25-30 euros each way.  The best place to book tickets is on the Trainline website.  About 5 trains per day, depending upon the season, are suitable for travel.  It is important to note that the train does not actually stop in Giverny.  It stops in nearby Vernon.   Once arriving Vernon, rush to one of the shuttle busses (10 euro round trip) to Giverny.  Once the busses fill up, it might be a long wait until another arrives.  We have seen situation in busy seasons where travelers have not been able to board shuttle busses because of crowds.  A surefire way to get to Giverny from the Vernon train station is to reserve a taxi at Giverny Taxi at phone number 07.71.89.08.03.
  • Walking distance to the house is 7 km from the train station.  Adjacent to the train station is a bicycle rental shop.
  • Group Tours from Paris: Of course there are big bus group tours to Giverny.
  • Hire a Driver:  We like a company called MyDayTrip.  It's not inexpensive.  The cost is about $200 each way.
